Squash Takes Centre Stage in Sydney’s CBD at Martin Place Pop-Up

Published Fri 09 May 2025

From Monday 14 to Thursday 17 April, Squash NSW brought the sport right into the heart of the city — with a spectacular pop-up court activation at Martin Place that drew in curious commuters, office workers, school groups, and even the Minister for Sport.

Set against the backdrop of Sydney’s bustling financial district, the transparent Perspex court stood tall as a striking centrepiece and invitation for passers-by to discover the excitement of squash. The activation was part of a broader push by Squash NSW to raise the profile of the sport, engage new audiences, and promote participation in the City Houses Squash competition.

Squash on Show — For Everyone

Throughout the week, the court played host to a mix of activities — from exhibition matches and coaching demos to casual hit-arounds for first-timers.
Crowds gathered to watch elite athletes in action and were given a unique chance to jump on court and give the sport a try — often in their work clothes, with racquets provided!

It was a fantastic way to show just how accessible, fast-paced, and fun squash can be.

Minister of Sport Joins the Action

The event reached a high point on Thursday afternoon, when NSW Minister for Sport, Steve Kamper, visited the activation.
Minister Kamper not only voiced his strong support for the growth of squash in NSW, but also stepped onto the court himself, having a hit with Paul Nicolaou, Executive Director of Business Sydney.

His attendance — along with the buzz from the business community — highlighted the importance of partnerships in growing sport participation and creating more visibility for squash in public spaces.

Incredible Media Coverage and Engagement

The Martin Place activation received fantastic exposure across social media, particularly LinkedIn, with strong promotion from event collaborators including Paul Nicolaou and key supporters of Squash NSW.

It wasn’t just a celebration of the sport — it was a strategic move to place squash into the public eye, drive interest in weekday leagues like City Houses Squash, and inspire people of all ages to pick up a racquet. The event also featured Michelle Martin who had a 1:1 chat with the Minister for Sport along with celebrity chef George Calombaris. It was incredible to see the support our sport garnered and certainly shows positive signs for the future.

A Big Thank You

This event wouldn’t have been possible without the efforts of George Deubler, Squash NSW staff and volunteers, and our valued partners across government and business. Their hard work behind the scenes helped deliver an event that made squash look — and feel — like the vibrant, accessible sport it truly is.
