Squash steps Into the Spotlight in Martin Place

Published Thu 16 Apr 2026

You don’t expect to walk through Martin Place and see a squash court.

But from 20–24 April, that’s exactly what will be there, a transparent demo-sized perspex court, set up in the middle of the CBD and open from 7am to 7pm each day.

Her Excellency the Honourable Margaret Beazley AC KC will officially launch the 2026 CBD Competition event at 9am on Monday 20 April, marking the start of five days of activity in the heart of the city.

Just Squash It is free, open to all ages and skill levels, and designed for one simple thing:
to let people stop, watch, and step on court themselves.

This isn’t squash tucked away inside a club.

It’s squash on display. Visible from every angle, right in the flow of the city.

Squash, Out in the Open

Squash will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games. That moment will put the sport on a global stage. Just Squash It does something different, it puts it directly in front of people.

What Changes When You Can See It

For many people, squash has been out of sight and, as a result, out of mind.

Not because it isn’t engaging, but because you don’t often come across it. It’s hard to get into a sport you never see.

A perspex court in Martin Place changes that instantly.

You can see every rally. Hear every shot. Watch how quickly the game moves, and how quickly people start to get involved. It removes the sense that squash is something technical or difficult to access, and replaces it with something far more immediate.

Designed to be Experienced

Scott Murray, CEO of Squash NSW, said the event is a pivotal moment for the sport locally.

“Squash is a high-energy, inclusive sport that’s engaging to play, and its inclusion in the Olympic Games provides a unique opportunity to accelerate its growth,” he said.

“Just Squash It is about taking the game beyond traditional courts and into the public spotlight, demonstrating how accessible and enjoyable it is for everyone. Our goal is to inspire more people to pick up a racquet and experience squash for themselves.”

Throughout the week, the court will host a mix of demonstrations and open sessions, with people stepping on court for the first time alongside more experienced players. The transparent design means nothing is hidden, every movement, every rally, every reaction is part of the experience.

It shifts squash from something you might not think about to something you can see, understand, and try in the moment.

Bringing Energy Back Into the City

Paul Nicolaou, Executive Director of Business Sydney, highlighted the broader impact of activating public space in the CBD.

“Martin Place is Sydney’s civic heart, and events like this bring energy, activity, and connection back into the city,” he said.

“We’re proud to support initiatives that not only showcase sport but also contribute to a vibrant and engaging urban environment.”

Whether you’re passing through on your way to work, stopping at lunchtime, or heading home in the evening, the court is there, open, active, and inviting you to take a closer look.

Not behind closed doors.
Right in the middle of the city.
